The Corners of Their Mouth: A Queer Food Zine – Issue 2 Kickstarter is live!

About this Project

In October 2017, we published The Corners of Their Mouth: A Queer Food Zine, Volume 1: part cookbook, part comic, 100% queer. In volume 1, we welcomed you into our queer kitchen. In volume 2, we visit our queer friends’ kitchens through recipes, comics, poetry, and essays.

Issue 2 of The Corners of Their Mouth includes contributions from friends who graciously agreed to support our project. It’s also a test-run: if this run goes well, then Issue 3 will have an open call for submissions. We want to provide a space for queer folks, especially non-monosexual (bi, pan, queer, etc.) and gender diverse (transgender, nonbinary, agender, intersex, etc.) individuals to share not just their recipes but their queer food discourse, their art, and their personal stories of how food shows up in their lives and their communities. We believe in compensation for the physical and emotional labor of producing content, especially for marginalized creators; it’s of vital importance to us that our contributors get paid something for their work.

In this Volume

  • A comic about queer expats and a giant rice-cooker pancake
  • Easy, practical recipes for your life
  • Recipes for Queer Nihilism
  • A comic collab about food and Queer Angst™
  • Risograph cover by PaperPressPunch; art by Robin Elan

What You’re Funding

We need your help to cover our printing costs and help pay our contributors. For our past zine projects, we paid the cost of printing and materials out of pocket. All our profits went back into paying for reprints and materials and into seeding future projects. Removing the barrier of the upfront cost would allow us more financial freedom, including the ability to pay ourselves something for our labor, as well as the ability to ethically include other contributors and pay them at comparable rates to other indie publishers.

We believe strongly that queer folks ought to be paid for our work. A portion of the funds will be used to pay our contributors.

  1. Should the Hummus level be more than the Pancake level? Seems odd to have the zine+sticker be the same cost as the zine alone, unless it’s some kind of “early-bird” deal…

Oh no! I’m sorry, that’s a mistake we made. Thank you for pointing that out—we’ll fix it!

      1. Happy to help! My daughter was quite taken with the Flowers zine.
