In which every bakery I encountered in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Kagoshima was decked out for Halloween.
Manneken, Hirakata
PUMPKIN. PUDDING. WAFFLES.
I tried one of the お化けクリームパン (obake kuriimu pan), ghost-shaped cream-filled pastry.
Hokuo, Tokyo
Hokuo had these cream-filled jack-o-lantern melon pan! The orange one is Hokkaido melon cream, though, not pumpkin.
Sizuya, Kyoto
In addition to the obake pan(お化けパン), there’s the “Halloween hot dog,” which has a couple slices of kabocha in there with the curry coleslaw.
Mini-One, Kyoto
How about that ghost croissant?
These are just the ones I photographed, too. I’ve never seen anything like the level of saturation of Halloween baked goods I did this year. And they’re all adorable!
Next time: Speaking of Kyoto…
